26 June 2013 Documentation

Today we need to submitted our wiki researches and our pre-project plan document to our lecturers. Before class at the afternoon, we had a short meeting at our leader place to do a short discussion.

We start deciding which interactive installation can be used as our references. At this moment, I discovered that different people have different perception on same object when we start exchanging our own opinions and perception about each research we have doneAs I am responsible for recording all the discussion we have made, I have learnt how to get the important points of discussion and record them down so that we can have a clearer reference on our next meetings.

After that, we discussed about what are the tools available for us to set up our installation. We have suggested 3 ideas, which are Arduino,  Infrared and Kinect. The main reason we suggested these 3 tools because we have learned Arduino and Infrared before in our previous lectures and workshop, and our lecturer has introduced some features provided by Kinect to us before.

Based on the researches we have done, we prevent ourself from making something that are lack of interactivity and less interesting. The ideas we have after our discussion are make something useful and fun to interact with and make something boring into interesting installation. We have listed out what are the input and output options available for us:
Input:
  • Sound
  • Phone
  • Infrared (Touching)
  • Kinect (Motion Gesture)
  • Light
Output:
  • Sound and Music
  • Projector Imaging
  • Object (Mechanical)
Before we making any decision, we found out that there are a lot of people using infrared (touching) as input and projector imaging as output already. So, after some discussion and consideration, we plan to use some mechanical objects as output and make something that can catch people attention and create curiosity among them.

After discussion, we compile all our wiki researches together and start create our pre-product plan document. When we create our pre-product plan document, I also learnt from my teammates how to use table wisely to clearly display the different of objects on Word Document. By using this technique, readers are able to understand the features and differences easily in one glance.

At the afternoon class, we have presented our primary ideas to our lecturers and have received many useful feedbacks from our lecturers.

From our lecturers feedbacks, we know that we need to think about creative aspect of our installation. It is best if we can create something outstanding and non-repeated ideas. We need to know our target devices and our capability. For example, Kinect is too expensive for us if we going to buy a new one. So, maybe we can choose other options such as rent or borrow from other people.

In addition, our lecturers also brief us on our own responsibilities and project managements. We need to know how to manage our team work loads and think about our own time managements. I learned how to set a target, for example spending how many hours per week in doing certain tasks from our lecturers.

Last but not least, I have learned that we need to keep updated on new application trends and think from different perspective.

25 June 2013 Documentation

As we need to submit our wiki researches and a pre-product plan document tomorrow, our group had a on-line meeting at Facebook.

As the Content Leader of the group, I have searched for different interactive installation done by people all over the world as the wiki research that we need to pass up tomorrow. From doing these research, I have discovered that there are a lot of creative installations done by people from all over the world and these installations can provide me tons of inspiration in creative and design aspects. I have also learned how to use advance search option provided by search engines to filter my search results. This technique saves me a lot of time as I can search for what I want in shorter time and easier way.

Here are some examples of interactive installation that I think may be useful as our group's references:

19 June 2013 Documentation

This is our Teamwork Practice module's second project. In this project, we need to produce in a group, an interactive object or environment entitle "Beyond the Mouse, Behind the Screen" which is designed to be exhibited in a public gallery context.

We are formed in a group by our lecturers, known as the most effective group formation based on our Belbin Test and MBTI Test results. My group mates are Gin Yaw, Kah Suit and Gerry. As we are given opportunity to assign group position ourself, Gin Yaw is chosen as our group leader and here are our group position:

Content Leader: Lim Jing Jian
Sub: Bernardus Gerry
Sub: Hooi Kah Suit

Design Leader: Hooi Kah Suit
Sub: Lim Jing Jian
Sub: Kho Giin Yaw

Technical Leader: Bernardus Gerry
Sub: Kho Giin Yaw
Sub: Hooi Kah Suit

Logistic Leader: Kho Giin Yaw
Sub: Lim Jing Jian
Sub: Bernardus Gerry

My primary role is Content Leader, which is responsible for searching contents and researches once the concepts and ideas of group project are confirmed. I am also responsible for analyse and arrange the information to reinforce the project. My secondary roles are design and logistic assistant which is responsible for assist Design Leader and Logistic Leader in performing their tasks.

After finish our group positioning, we need to assign a group name to our group. After some discussion, we decided to name our group "TBC", abbreviation of "The Best Crew". As soon as we finish our group formation, we are required to look for at least 8 researches wiki on contemporary creative practice in gallery-based physical computing (interactive digital work that does not use conventional input/output devices as its primary interface engagement methods). These researches are required to be submitted on lesson 7. In addition, we are also required to submit a pre-product plan document that talk about our project's technology, art benchmark and curation measurement on lesson 7.
